AIR II: Conventional Hardwire

This article provides installation instructions for the AIR II installed via conventional hardwiring.

Before You Begin

The installation kit contains an AIR-II camera, mount plate with adhesive, wedge mount with adhesive, L-shaped Torx flat screwdriver, cleaning wipes, and a pre-installed SD card. Depending on the type of installation you’re completing, your kit may also contain a diagnostic cable (HD or LD) or hardwire harness.

Additional tools you may need include a smartphone, pen, two fuse holders with 5-A fuses, two heat-shrink butt connectors, one closed ring terminal, one start washer, one ground screw, dash panel removers, insulated crimpers, wire cutters, wire strippers, electrical tape, cordless drill, Philips bit, utility knife, and multimeter.

Installation Overview

The following steps provide an overview of the installation process:

  1. Device Mounting.

  2. Device Connections.

  3. Adjust Angle.

  4. Verify Installation.

Installation Steps

1. Device Mounting.

Choose a suitable mounting location on the windshield. The recommended location is near the rearview mirror (to the left, right, or beneath) where the camera has a clear view of the road while minimizing driver obstruction. For heavy-duty vehicle installations, position the camera so its field of view is kept clear by the windshield wiper sweep.

  1. Plan the cable route from its mounting location you identified to the power connection point in the vehicle (typically near the steering column).

Ensure the cable length is sufficient and leave a few inches of slack near the mounting location on the windshield for adjustments.

  2. Select the appropriate mount:

    • Use the flat mount plate for vertical windshields. This is commonly used in heavy-duty vehicles and comes pre-installed on the camera.

    • Use the wedge mount plate for sloped windshields (30°-60°).

  3. Install the mount on the identified portion of the windshield.

    1. Clean the windshield surface using the cleaning wipes, then follow with a dry cloth.

Note: If you’re installing the camera in cold weather, warm the windshield prior to applying the mount to ensure proper adhesion.

    2. Remove the adhesive backing from the mount plate.

    3. Attach the mount plate firmly to the windshield.

    4. Apply firm pressure to the top and bottom of the plate to ensure proper adhesion.

  4. Connect the USB Type-C cable to the camera.

    1. Remove the Security Panel from the top of the camera.

    2. Insert the Type-C plug from the harness into the camera’s USB-C port.

    3. Reattach the Security Panel but do not insert the Torx screws until the camera has passed the Power Test during the verification process.

  5. Attach the camera to the mount.

Mount the camera onto the plate by sliding it into position until it is fully seated and secure.

  6. Route the USB-C cable from the camera through the headliner, down the A-pillar, and toward the vehicle power connection point.

Ensure the cable is tucked securely and does not interfere with airbags or vehicle operation.

2. Device Connections.

Complete the poke-and-wrap method outlined below for all harness connections. Do not use the manufacturer-supplied fuse taps for harness connections.

  1. With keys removed from the ignition, locate a vehicle wire providing 12 VDC ( + ) or 24 VDC ( + ). This will be the constant power source.

  2. Prep the power harness by replacing the red and white wire bullet connectors with inline fuse holders and installing a closed-ring terminal on the black wire.

  3. Complete the poke-and-wrap method outlined below for all harness connections:

    1. Remove 1 in. (2.5 cm) of insulation from the identified vehicle wire. Insert a non-conductive tool to create a loop, then insert the harness red wire.

    2. Tighten the loop, wrap the bare wire around the connection at least three times, and fold it over.

    3. Wrap electrical tape thoroughly, covering the insulation on both side of the connection.

    4. Secure the connection with a cable tie and add a stress loop approximately 1 in. (2.5 cm) away.

    5. Locate a vehicle wire that provides 12 VDC ( + ) or 24 VDC ( + ) when the vehicle is on and running, and 0 VDC ( + ) when the key is in the off or accessory position. This will be the ignition source.

Repeat the poke-and-wrap steps (3.A-3.D) to connect the white wire.

    6. Attach the ring terminal to a suitable chassis ground point. Confirm there are no obstructions behind the mounting location before securing.

  4. Secure any excess wiring using cable ties. Ensure all wiring is safely routed and does not interfere with vehicle operation.

3. Verify Installation.

Use the Waylens Fleet App to verify the AIR-II installation. Confirm the following:

  • Power check

  • Network check

  • Video stream check

  1. Connect to the camera’s Wi-Fi network using your smartphone.

The network name matches the camera serial number (SN) listed on the bottom of the camera and back of the installation booklet. The network password is also located next to the SN on the camera and installation booklet.

  2. Tap Start Installation Test.

The app will check on the camera’s power, network, and streaming capabilities. These checks can be performed separately from the ‘Maintenance Page.’

  3. Check the video streams from the Camera page.

  4. If needed, adjust the camera’s angle of view by rotating the Camera Adjuster dial on the right side of the camera until it is positioned parallel with the road.

  5. After installation, add the vehicle to the Portal. Enter the information directly or contact Support with camera serial number, network password, and vehicle details. Refer to the Help Center section Adding a Vehicle for instructions.
