Release Notes - Odometer & Engine Hours Data Improvements

This article announces new improvements to Odometer and Engine Hours Data.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

🚀 What’s Launching?

We’re excited to announce two major enhancements designed to give you more accurate, consistent, and reliable vehicle data:

  1. Universal Odometer Algorithm — providing improved mileage accuracy and consistency across supported devices.

  2. Diagnostic Engine Hours Prioritization — ensuring more precise engine runtime reporting for better maintenance and warranty management.

These updates work together to simplify your experience and improve the accuracy of key fleet metrics you depend on every day.

1️⃣ Universal Odometer Algorithm

The new Universal Odometer Algorithm introduces a smarter, unified way to calculate mileage across supported GPS Insight devices. Instead of using different methods depending on the device type, the system now automatically selects the most reliable data source available — keeping your odometer readings aligned with your vehicle’s actual dashboard.

The algorithm continuously evaluates three possible data inputs:

  • Diagnostic Odometer (Preferred): Uses valid diagnostic data from the vehicle when available.

  • Trip-Based Odometer (Fallback): Uses trip increments if diagnostic data is temporarily unavailable or inconsistent.

  • GPS-Based Odometer (Last Resort): Ensures continued mileage tracking when no other data sources are available.

Once valid diagnostic data returns, the system immediately switches back to it for maximum accuracy.

Odometer insights are available in the Vehicle Card Overview tab. You can view odometer history, see whether changes were system-generated or manual, and access the Odometer History Detail report for deeper insights.

2️⃣ Engine Hours Prioritization

We’re also improving how engine runtime is tracked and reported. Going forward, the GPS Fleet Tracking system will use diagnostic engine hours (supported devices only) as the primary source for engine runtime data. This change ensures your reports and dashboards reflect more precise and reliable information — especially valuable for maintenance schedules and warranty tracking.

When diagnostic data is unavailable, the system automatically falls back to calculated engine hours to maintain continuity.

Note: Users can opt to select the Calculated Engine Hours data source, if preferred. Common scenarios wherein a user may opt for the Calculated source include, but are not limited to: if the user deems the Diagnostic data to be unreliable or if the user prefers to utilize waypoints.

Benefits

These updates are part of our continued effort to deliver smarter, more reliable fleet insights. By standardizing how odometer and engine hour data are processed and displayed, you’ll see:

✅ Improved data accuracy and consistency across reports and dashboards

✅Simplified system behavior — fewer manual steps or troubleshooting needed

✅ Greater confidence in the information used for maintenance, billing, and operational planning
